FALL 2009 CALL-OUT MEETING:  American Spies:  CIA officer and chief NSA historian talk espionage

On October 27th, the Student Alliance for National Security (SANS) will kick-off the 2009-2010 year.  The meeting will feature an informal discussion and Q&A with former CIA spy Gene Coyle and chief National Security Agency historian David Hatch.  We will also introduce potential new members to the SANS organization, recent events, and projects we’ll be working on this year. If you have any great ideas and are interested in being involved in SANS in any way, please join us!

DECLARING OIL INDEPENDENCE: THE ROAD TO ENERGY SECURITY IN THE U.S.
Date of Event: Wednesday, April 15

On April 15, the Student Alliance for National Security (SANS) kicked-off its nationwide Declaration of Oil Independence project with a discussion on energy security.  Panelists included John Clark, former Senior Advisor to Governor Mitch Daniels; Ron Zucker, Legislative Director of 2020 Vision; Jesse Kharbanda, Executive Director of the Hoosier Environmental Council; and Bill Brown, Indiana University’s Director of Sustainability.

TOP PENTAGON OFFICIAL DISCUSSES OBAMA’S FOREIGN POLICY CHALLENGES
Date of Event:  Tuesday, March 3, 2009

On Tuesday, March 3, the Student Alliance for National Security (SANS) held a discussion with former Assistant Secretary of Defense Mary Beth Long on “Challenges Facing the Obama Administration: Afghanistan, Iraq, and Iran.”  The event took place at 7 p.m. in the Whittenberger Auditorium.

Long is the highest-ranking woman to have ever served in the Pentagon. While working as Assistant Secretary of Defense, she oversaw U.S. defense policies around the world, including in Iraq and Afghanistan. From 1986-1999, Long worked in covert operations for the Central Intelligence Agency.  (Click here for a full biography)

McCAIN & OBAMA CAMPAIGNS DEBATE ENERGY SECURITY
Date of Event:  Tuesday, October 28, 2008

The Student Alliance for National Security (SANS) and 2020 Vision hosted a debate between the McCain & Obama campaigns on energy security one week before the election.  Representatives from each campaign discussed their candidate’s energy proposals–from moves to increase the use of renewable energy to calls for America to “drill, baby, drill!”

The event, “Energy Security and the Next President”, featured longtime McCain advisor Floyd DesChamps and Obama campaign representative Eric Dannenmaier, a prominent environmental lawyer and professor.  Following the program, there was a panel discussion on energy security issues with leading experts.

DISCUSSION ON THE MIDDLE EAST
WITH JORDAN’S AMBASSADOR TO THE U.S.
Date of Event:  Monday, October 13, 2008

On October 13, the Student Alliance for National Security (SANS) and the IU School of Law welcomed Prince Zeid, Jordan’s Ambassador to the United States, to Indiana University for a discussion on the Middle East and the role the next U.S. president will need to play in the region.  The event, “U.S. Policy and the Future of the Middle East:  A Conversation with Prince Zeid,” give attendees a rare opportunity to hear directly from one of the region’s top government officials.  Discussion ranged from the war in Iraq to the current status of the Arab-Israeli peace process.

FORMER BUSH NATIONAL SECURITY ADVISOR TO SPEAK AT INDIANA UNIVERSITY

The Student Alliance for National Security (SANS), in conjunction with the Center on American & Global Security, is proud to welcome President Bush’s former Deputy National Security Advisor, Meghan O’Sullivan, to Bloomington to discuss her experiences in Baghdad and the White House, as well as her predictions for Iraq’s future. O’Sullivan, currently a Fellow at Harvard’s John F. Kennedy School of Government, served as the President’s chief advisor on Iraq and Afghanistan until her departure from the White House in October 2007.

LECTURE BY IRAQI AMBASSADOR TO THE UNITED NATIONS

On Tuesday, April 3, the Student Alliance for National Security brought Iraqi Ambassador to the United Nations Feisal Istrabadi to Indiana University for a lecture entitled, “Implications of Failure in Iraq for U.S. Security“. The event was held at 7:30 pm in the Whittenberger Auditorium of the Indiana Memorial Union.

Excerpt from press release: “With the fear that violence in Iraq will continue to spread, officials in Baghdad and around the world continue to search for ways to ease tensions and prevent all-out civil war. In addition to the future of Iraq itself, the political and security interests of other countries, including the United States, are at stake. Ambassador Istrabadi will address these and other issues at the lecture.”

SECURING THE BOMB: STOPPING NUCLEAR PROLIFERATION IN THE 21st CENTURY
Date of Event:  February 26, 2007

The Student Alliance for National Security held a forum on nuclear weapons at Indiana University on February 26, 2007 in Alumni Hall from 6:30-8:00 pm. “Securing the Bomb: Stopping Nuclear Proliferation in the 21st Century” featured top diplomatic, intelligence, and security officials discussing the threat posed by nuclear proliferation.

Panelists addressed the nuclear threat from Iran and North Korea, as well as the possibility of terrorists acquiring nuclear weapons and materials–a danger labeled by the 9/11 Commission to be the greatest threat facing the United States.

Expert panelists at the event included:

–Ambassador Avis T. Bohlen, former Assistant Secretary of State under Presidents Clinton and Bush
–Tyler Drumheller, former Chief of CIA Operations in Europe
–Ambassador Donald Mahley, current Deputy Assistant Secretary of State (unable to attend)
–Daryl G. Kimball, Executive Director of the Arms Control Association
